What the appliance detected
Detected condition
The dryer detected restricted airflow through the lint-screen or vent system.
What may contribute
Possible causes
- The lint screen may be clogged with lint or residue.
- The transition duct, wall vent, or exterior hood may be crushed, kinked, blocked, or heavily linted.
- The installed vent run may exceed the model limits for length or number of elbows.
- If airflow remains poor with the owner-accessible path clear, the home vent system or dryer may need qualified service.
Start conservatively
Safe preliminary checks
Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.
Clean the lint screen and inspect the visible vent path
- Stop the dryer, let hot surfaces cool, and clean the lint screen completely before the next cycle.
- Inspect only visible transition ducting for crushing, sharp kinks, loose connections, or obvious lint buildup. Do not reach into the cabinet.
Check the exterior exhaust hood
- With a normal heated cycle running only if there is no burning smell, overheating, or other hazard, confirm the exterior hood opens and air can leave the home.
- Clear only safely reachable exterior lint or debris. If the full home vent run needs cleaning, use a qualified vent-cleaning professional.
Actions not recommended
- Do not keep using a dryer that is severely overheating, scorching laundry, or producing a burning smell.
- Do not use plastic or foil ducting where the installation instructions require approved metal venting.
- Do not remove panels or bypass thermal or airflow safety devices to clear AF or F4 E3.
When to stop and request service
- AF / F4 E3 / Check Vent returns after the lint screen and visible vent path are clean and properly routed.
- The home vent run is inaccessible, damaged, or still has weak airflow after owner-safe checks.
- The dryer overheats, scorches items, smells burned, or the next step requires internal airflow, sensor, or heater diagnosis.
