GE Microwave F1 Error Code

F1 is both a temperature-sensing fault and an excessive-heat warning. Stop cooking, disconnect power, let the microwave cool naturally, and do not open the cabinet. A returned F1 needs qualified service.

GE defines F1 as an open thermal sensor condition due to excessive heat in the microwave cavity.

What may contribute

Possible causes

  • The microwave cavity may have experienced excessive heat.
  • The thermal-sensor circuit is being reported as open.
  • The display alone cannot distinguish the sensor, wiring, connector, control, airflow, or another internal cause.

Safe preliminary checks

Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.

  1. Record F1 and stop cooking

    • Photograph or write down F1 and the full GE model number.
    • If there is smoke, a burning odor, arcing, melted material, or uncontrolled heat, keep power off and request qualified help rather than attempting a reset.

  2. Let the microwave cool naturally with power off

    • Disconnect power and allow the appliance to cool naturally. Keep exterior vents unobstructed without removing trim or panels.
    • Do not use water, ice, compressed air, or another forced-cooling method.

  3. Use the GE 30-second reset only after the appliance is cool and conditions are normal

    • If there are no danger signs and the microwave has cooled, shut off its breaker or fuse for 30 seconds.
    • Restore power once. If F1 returns, stop use and request qualified microwave service.

Actions not recommended

  • Do not remove the outer cabinet, control panel, waveguide cover, vent housing, or any microwave service panel.
  • Do not touch or test the high-voltage capacitor, transformer, inverter, magnetron, internal fuses, relays, thermal sensors, humidity sensors, probes, interlock wiring, or control boards. Dangerous voltage can remain after power is disconnected.
  • Do not perform live-voltage, resistance, continuity, capacitor-discharge, or internal connector testing as a homeowner troubleshooting step.
  • Do not bypass, tape, bridge, defeat, or adjust a door-interlock switch, and do not operate a microwave with a damaged or misaligned door.
  • Do not replace a sensor, touch panel, probe, board, relay, fuse, or wiring harness from the display code alone.

When to stop and request service

  • Do not restore power for a test if F1 appeared with smoke, arcing, burning odor, melted material, or severe overheating.
  • Request qualified microwave service if the code returns after the single GE-documented power reset.
  • Leave the microwave powered off and request service immediately for smoke, a burning odor, repeated arcing, abnormal overheating, a damaged door, visible electrical damage, water near electrical parts, or repeated breaker trips.
