GE microwave PF / 888 / 8888 Status Message

PF / 888 / 8888 is usually a power-up status display. GE says it can be canceled with Cancel/Off or Clear/Off, after which the clock can be reset on equipped models.

Applies to GE microwave oven with an electronic control that uses the documented GE microwave fault-code table

What the appliance detected

Detected condition

GE describes PF, 888, and 8888 as displays that can appear after initial installation or restoration of power rather than automatically indicating a failed component.

What may contribute

Possible causes

  • Initial installation or first power-up.
  • Power restoration after an outage or interruption.
  • A persistent or repeatedly returning display may need model-specific evaluation rather than repeated clearing.

Start conservatively

Safe preliminary checks

Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.

  1. Confirm whether power was just connected or restored

    • Record the display and note whether the microwave was just installed, unplugged, had its breaker switched, or experienced an outage.
    • If there are smoke, arcing, burning odor, unusual heat, or repeated breaker-trip signs, do not clear the message and resume use; leave power off and seek qualified help.
  2. Clear the power-up display the way GE documents

    • Touch Cancel/Off or Clear/Off to cancel PF, 888, or 8888.
    • Reset the clock if your model has one. If the display immediately returns without another power interruption, use the model manual or qualified service rather than repeatedly clearing it.

Actions not recommended

  • Do not remove the outer cabinet, control panel, waveguide cover, vent housing, or any microwave service panel.
  • Do not touch or test the high-voltage capacitor, transformer, inverter, magnetron, internal fuses, relays, thermal sensors, humidity sensors, probes, interlock wiring, or control boards. Dangerous voltage can remain after power is disconnected.
  • Do not perform live-voltage, resistance, continuity, capacitor-discharge, or internal connector testing as a homeowner troubleshooting step.
  • Do not bypass, tape, bridge, defeat, or adjust a door-interlock switch, and do not operate a microwave with a damaged or misaligned door.
  • Do not replace a sensor, touch panel, probe, board, relay, fuse, or wiring harness from the display code alone.

When to stop and request service

  • If PF, 888, or 8888 repeatedly returns without a known power interruption, have the appliance and supply condition evaluated instead of treating it as a normal outage message.
  • Request qualified microwave service if the code returns after the single GE-documented power reset.
  • Leave the microwave powered off and request service immediately for smoke, a burning odor, repeated arcing, abnormal overheating, a damaged door, visible electrical damage, water near electrical parts, or repeated breaker trips.
