KitchenAid range Lo / Pre Status Message

Lo or Pre is normally a status message, not a fault. On supported models it indicates that the oven is still below the threshold where the display begins showing the increasing temperature.

Applies to KitchenAid range or wall oven using the documented display family

What the appliance detected

Detected condition

The oven temperature is still low or the oven is preheating; KitchenAid notes that some models show Lo/Pre below about 170°F before switching to the rising temperature display.

What may contribute

Possible causes

  • A bake or other heating cycle has just started.
  • The oven cavity has not yet reached the model threshold for showing the rising temperature.

Start conservatively

Safe preliminary checks

Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.

  1. Give the oven normal preheat time

    • Confirm a heating cycle was intentionally started and the correct temperature was selected.
    • Keep the door closed during normal preheat unless the recipe or owner manual says otherwise.
  2. Watch for the display to change

    • On supported models, the display should change as the oven warms and may begin showing temperature around 170°F.
    • Listen for the normal preheat tone or indicator described in the owner manual.
  3. Treat failure to heat as a separate symptom

    • If Lo/Pre never progresses and the oven does not warm, stop treating it as merely a status message.
    • Use the model-specific oven-not-heating guidance or request service rather than repeatedly restarting the cycle.

Actions not recommended

  • Do not open panels or test heating circuits because Lo/Pre appears during normal preheat.
  • Do not bypass temperature sensing or door switches.
  • Do not repeatedly restart preheat to force the display to change.

When to stop and request service

  • Lo/Pre remains indefinitely and the oven is not warming.
  • Heating is erratic, uncontrolled, or accompanied by a fault code.
  • Smoke, sparking, burning odor, gas odor, or repeated breaker trips occur.
