This message is often a door-status/safety prompt rather than a component failure. Open and close the door once, remove visible packing obstructions, and make sure the cooking rack is seated correctly if equipped.   • The door may have remained closed long enough for the anti-unintended-start prompt to appear.
  • Packing material or another visible object may obstruct normal door closure.
  • An installed cooking rack may be out of position and prevent full closure.
  • A door, latch, hinge, or interlock problem may require professional diagnosis if the message persists.

Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.

  1. Record the display and confirm the model

    • Photograph or write down the exact display before changing anything: DOOR, OPEN/CLOSE DOOR.
    • Confirm the complete Maytag model number and compare the display with the owner documentation for that exact microwave.

  2. Perform only the documented exterior door checks

    • Open and close the door once, then try the normal start control.
    • Remove only visible packing material or loose items that clearly block the door. If equipped, confirm the cooking rack is seated in its intended position.
    • Inspect from the outside for obvious door, hinge, latch, or seal-surface damage. Do not remove panels or adjust interlock switches.

  • Do not replace a keypad, sensor, thermistor, control board, relay board, or other internal part from the displayed code alone.

When to stop and request service

  • Request qualified service if the door will not close normally, the message does not clear, or there is visible damage or misalignment at the door, latch, hinge, or seal surface.
  • Leave power disconnected and arrange service immediately for smoke, a burning odor, repeated arcing, a repeated breaker trip, visible door or wiring damage, water near electrical parts, or abnormal heat that does not subside normally.
