Whirlpool Microwave F7 E9 Error Code

F7 E9 has a useful external check: make sure the upper vent door is not blocked by trim, cabinetry, stored items, or another visible obstruction. If the vent is clear, try one documented reset and request service if the code returns.

Applies to Whirlpool over-the-range microwave with an applicable electronic display

What the appliance detected

Detected condition

Whirlpool directs owners with F7 E9 to check whether the upper vent door can open and close freely because a blocked vent can contribute to overheating.

What may contribute

Possible causes

  • The upper vent door may be blocked by trim, cabinetry, or another obstruction.
  • Restricted ventilation may be contributing to an overheating condition.
  • An internal control, vent mechanism, sensor, or wiring issue may require professional diagnosis if the external vent path is clear.

Start conservatively

Safe preliminary checks

Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.

  1. Record the display and confirm the model

    • Photograph or write down the exact display before resetting it: F7 E9.
    • Confirm the complete Whirlpool model number and compare the code with the owner documentation for that exact microwave.
  2. Check the upper vent from the outside only

    • With the microwave off and cool, make sure the upper vent door is not visibly blocked by trim, cabinetry, stored items, grease buildup, or another external obstruction.
    • Do not remove trim, cabinetry, the microwave cover, or vent assemblies. If the vent door is jammed, damaged, or cannot move normally without force, stop and request service.
  3. Try one Whirlpool power reset

    • If there is no smoke, burning odor, repeated arcing, visible door damage, active water intrusion, or repeated breaker trip, switch the microwave circuit breaker off for one full minute.
    • Restore power once, monitor the display for at least one minute, and verify normal operation without opening the cabinet.
    • If the code returns, stop using the microwave and request qualified service rather than repeating resets.

Actions not recommended

  • Do not remove the outer cabinet, control panel, vent housing, waveguide cover, or any service panel to chase an error code.
  • Do not touch or test the high-voltage capacitor, transformer, inverter, magnetron, internal fuse, interlock wiring, control boards, sensors, thermistors, relays, or internal harnesses.
  • Do not bypass, tape, bridge, defeat, or adjust the door-interlock system, and do not operate the microwave with a damaged or misaligned door.
  • Do not perform live-voltage, continuity, resistance, capacitor-discharge, or internal connector tests as an owner troubleshooting step.
  • Do not replace a keypad, sensor, thermistor, control board, relay board, or other internal part from the displayed code alone.

When to stop and request service

  • Stop using the microwave and let it cool with power disconnected if it feels unusually hot or the vent cannot move freely.
  • Request qualified microwave service if the code returns after the single Whirlpool one-minute power reset.
  • Leave power disconnected and arrange service immediately for smoke, a burning odor, repeated arcing, a repeated breaker trip, visible door or wiring damage, or water near electrical parts.
