Microwave Runs but Does Not Heat: Safe Checks

If the light, fan or turntable runs but food stays cold, first separate a settings or Demo-mode issue from a true no-heat condition. A microwave that still does not heat after a manufacturer-supported water test needs qualified service rather than cabinet-level diagnosis.

What can cause this symptom

  • Demo mode or a timer-only function is active.
  • The selected power level or cooking function is not appropriate for the test.
  • The door is not closing normally because of debris, an obstruction or damage.
  • The turntable or cookware setup is preventing even heating on applicable models.
  • An internal high-voltage heating, control or interlock condition requires qualified service.

Safe checks in order

  1. 1

Confirm it is a true no-heat symptom

    • Use a normal microwave cooking mode, not Kitchen Timer, Demo mode, grill-only or another non-heating function.
    • Confirm the power level is set as the exact model instructions require.
  2. 2

Check the door and cavity from the outside

    • With the microwave off, remove food debris or an obvious obstruction from the door-contact area using only the cleaning method allowed by the manual.
    • Do not operate a microwave with a bent door, damaged latch, damaged seal or door that will not close normally.
  3. 3

    Check the turntable and cookware

    • Confirm the glass tray and support ring are seated correctly if the model uses them, and use microwave-safe cookware.
    • Do not run the microwave empty.
  4. 4

    Perform one manufacturer-supported water test

    • If the model guidance allows it, place about one cup of water in a microwave-safe cup on the turntable and run the documented high-power test.
    • If the water does not become noticeably warmer, stop testing and arrange service. Do not repeat cycles hoping the heat will return.

Brand and model differences

  • Samsung highlights Demo mode, Kitchen Timer, door closure, cavity debris and ventilation before service.
  • LG recommends checking normal operation and, on applicable models, the glass tray and rotation ring before using a water-heating check.
  • Whirlpool documents a one-cup water test and directs service when the microwave still does not heat.

Actions not recommended

  • Do not remove the cabinet or access the high-voltage section.
  • Do not bypass or meter-test door interlocks.
  • Do not test a magnetron, capacitor, transformer, diode, relay or live wiring.
  • Do not keep running a microwave that has no heat plus smoke, arcing, burning odor or abnormal electrical behavior.

When to request service

  • A documented water test confirms no heating.
  • The door, latch or seal is damaged or does not close normally.
  • Demo mode and normal settings are ruled out but heating is still absent.
  • Any next step would require cabinet removal, electrical measurement or internal component access.
