Amana microwave DOOR / OPEN/CLOSE DOOR Status Message

This is often a safety/status message rather than proof of a failed interlock. Open and close the door, remove visible packing obstructions, and make sure an equipped cooking rack is not preventing closure. Do not adjust or bypass the interlock system.

Applies to Amana over-the-range microwave with an applicable electronic display

What the appliance detected

Detected condition

Amana says a DOOR or OPEN/CLOSE DOOR message can appear when the door has remained closed for five minutes or more without a cycle being started, and it can also persist when the door is not fully closing.

What may contribute

Possible causes

  • The microwave may be requiring a normal door-open/door-close event before starting.
  • Packing material or an out-of-position cooking rack may be preventing full closure.
  • A door, latch, switch, alignment, or internal wiring problem may require qualified service if the message will not clear.

Start conservatively

Safe preliminary checks

Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.

  1. Record the display and confirm the model

    • Photograph or write down the exact display before changing anything: DOOR, OPEN/CLOSE DOOR.
    • Confirm the complete Amana model number and compare the display with the owner documentation for that exact microwave because code sets vary by platform.
  2. Open and close the door normally

    • Open the door fully and close it firmly without slamming it, then try the normal start sequence again.
    • Do not press, tape, hold, bridge, or otherwise manipulate any door-latch or interlock switch.
  3. Check only visible closure obstructions

    • Remove any visible packing material that may block the door area and make sure the cooking rack, if equipped, is seated so it does not interfere with closure.
    • If the door is bent, damaged, misaligned, loose, or will not close normally, stop using the microwave and request service.

Actions not recommended

  • Do not remove the outer cabinet, control panel, vent housing, waveguide cover, or any service panel to chase a display code.
  • Do not touch or test the high-voltage capacitor, transformer, inverter, magnetron, internal fuse, interlock wiring, control boards, sensors, thermistors, relays, or internal harnesses.
  • Do not bypass, tape, bridge, defeat, or adjust the door-interlock system, and do not operate the microwave with a damaged or misaligned door.
  • Do not perform live-voltage, continuity, resistance, capacitor-discharge, or internal connector tests as an owner troubleshooting step.
  • Do not replace a keypad, sensor, thermistor, control board, relay board, switch, or other internal part from a display code alone.

When to stop and request service

  • Request qualified microwave service if the DOOR or OPEN/CLOSE DOOR message does not clear after normal door operation and visible-obstruction checks.
  • Do not use the microwave if the door, latch area, hinges, or sealing surfaces are visibly damaged or misaligned.
