Maytag Microwave E24 Error Code

E24 is an abnormal-temperature safety condition, not a cue to keep testing the microwave. Stop use, disconnect power, allow natural cooling, and arrange service if there was smoke, odor, repeated arcing, or if E24 returns after one safe reset.

Maytag states that E24 means the microwave reached an overheat condition of 500°F (260°C) on applicable models.

What may contribute

Possible causes

  • The microwave detected an abnormal high-temperature condition.
  • A thermal sensor, gas sensor, control, or associated wiring may require professional diagnosis.
  • Restricted airflow or another internal operating problem may contribute on some models.

Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.

  1. Record the display and confirm the model

    • Photograph or write down the exact display before changing anything: E24.
    • Confirm the complete Maytag model number and compare the display with the owner documentation for that exact microwave.

  2. Stop use and let the microwave cool naturally

    • Turn cooking off and disconnect power at the breaker. Do not continue running test cycles while the appliance is unusually hot.
    • Allow the microwave and surrounding vent area to cool naturally. Do not use water, ice, compressed air, or forced cooling on the appliance.
    • Only after the appliance has cooled and there are no hazard signs should you restore power once and monitor for the code.

Actions not recommended

  • Do not remove the outer cabinet, control panel, vent housing, waveguide cover, or any service panel to chase an error code.
  • Do not touch or test the high-voltage capacitor, transformer, inverter, magnetron, internal fuse, interlock wiring, control boards, sensors, thermistors, relays, or internal harnesses.
  • Do not bypass, tape, bridge, defeat, or adjust the door-interlock system, and do not operate the microwave with a damaged or misaligned door.
  • Do not perform live-voltage, continuity, resistance, capacitor-discharge, or internal connector tests as an owner troubleshooting step.
  • Do not replace a keypad, sensor, thermistor, control board, relay board, or other internal part from the displayed code alone.

When to stop and request service

  • Arrange service without another test cycle if E24 followed smoke, a burning smell, repeated arcing, visible heat damage, or unusual cabinet/vent heat.
  • Request qualified microwave service if E24 returns after the appliance has cooled and power has been restored once.
  • Leave power disconnected and arrange service immediately for smoke, a burning odor, repeated arcing, a repeated breaker trip, visible door or wiring damage, water near electrical parts, or abnormal heat that does not subside normally.
