What the appliance detected
Detected condition
On an applicable Samsung heat-pump air conditioner in Heat mode, dF indicates automatic outdoor-unit defrost and is not itself a defect.
What may contribute
Possible causes
- Cold, humid outdoor conditions have allowed frost to form on the outdoor heat exchanger.
- The unit has automatically entered its normal heating-mode defrost cycle.
- The indoor fan has paused temporarily to avoid blowing cold air while defrost is active.
Start conservatively
Safe preliminary checks
Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.
Confirm Heat mode, dF, and the exact model
- Photograph dF and record the complete indoor- and outdoor-unit model numbers from safely visible labels.
- Confirm that the exact regional manual identifies dF as automatic defrost during heating.
Observe the normal cycle from a safe location
- Allow the automatic cycle to proceed without changing settings; Samsung says the reviewed systems generally defrost for about 5 to 12 minutes, but the exact manual prevails.
- A temporary indoor-fan pause or steam from the outdoor unit can be normal during this cycle.
Confirm that heating resumes
- After the interval allowed by the exact manual, note whether dF clears and normal heating resumes.
- Request qualified service if dF does not clear as documented, repeats unusually, heating does not resume, or heavy ice remains.
Actions not recommended
- Do not chip, scrape, melt, or pour hot water on outdoor-unit ice, and keep hands and tools away from the fan and coil.
- Do not repeatedly power-cycle the system or use an unsupported reset or forced-defrost procedure.
- Do not open housings, test energized parts, bypass protections, add refrigerant, or disturb refrigerant piping.
When to stop and request service
- The exact model or regional manual does not confirm that dF is normal defrost.
- dF continues beyond the model’s documented interval, returns abnormally often, or normal heating does not resume.
- The outdoor unit has persistent heavy ice, unusual noise, damaged wiring, leaking fluid, smoke, sparking, or a burning smell.
