Whirlpool Range C81 / C82 / C83 Error Code

C81, C82, and C83 are a shared overheat-protection family. Whirlpool says to turn the cooking area off, wait five minutes for cooling, verify operation, and use a one-minute power reset only if needed.

Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.

  1. Turn the cooking area off

    • Stop cooking and turn the affected cooking controls off.
    • Move cookware only when it can be handled safely; do not touch hot glass or metal surfaces.

  2. Allow at least five minutes of natural cooling

    • Wait at least five minutes as Whirlpool directs before attempting to use the cooktop again.
    • Do not pour water, apply ice, or use forced cooling on hot glass or cooking surfaces.

  3. Verify once, then use one reset only if needed

    • After cooling, verify cooktop operation once. If the code remains and there are no warning signs, Whirlpool also documents a one-minute breaker reset.
    • If C81, C82, or C83 returns, stop using the affected cooking area and request service instead of repeating cycles or resets.

  • Do not continue cooking through an overheat shutdown or repeatedly restart the affected surface element.
  • Do not cool hot glass or cookware with water, ice, sprays, or other rapid-cooling methods.
