Dishwasher Detergent Not Dissolving or Dispenser Not Opening

Likely categories to check

• A pan, cutting board, utensil or rack position physically blocks the dispenser door.
• The dispenser is overfilled, coated with detergent buildup, or loaded with old/damp detergent that has clumped.
• A pod or tablet does not fit correctly in the cup or needs hotter water than the current supply provides.
• Spray arms or nozzles are obstructed, so water action does not reach the dispenser normally.
• The dishwasher did not fill, heat, circulate or complete the cycle normally.

   Identify what the dispenser did

   • After a completed, cooled cycle, note whether the dispenser door stayed shut, opened with detergent still caked inside, or opened and left an undissolved pod elsewhere in the tub.
   • If the cycle stopped early, shows an error code, did not fill, or left standing water, troubleshoot that condition first.

   Reload for dispenser clearance

   • Make sure tall pans, cutting boards, handles, utensils and a lowered upper rack are not blocking the detergent door. Whirlpool, Samsung and Frigidaire all call out loading or spray clearance as a factor.
   • With the dishwasher off, close and open the empty dispenser by hand only as designed. Do not pry, bend or force the latch.

   Clean and dry the dispenser

   • Remove old detergent residue with warm water and a soft cloth after the machine is cool and powered off as appropriate for the model. Let the cup dry before adding fresh detergent.
   • Do not spray solvents, lubricants or caustic cleaners into the latch.

   Use fresh automatic-dishwasher detergent correctly

   • Use only detergent intended for automatic dishwashers. Do not overfill the cup, and make sure a pod or tablet fits without holding the lid partly open.
   • Replace detergent that is old, damp, hardened or clumped. Store it sealed and dry according to the product instructions.

   Check water-temperature guidance for the model and detergent

   • Samsung and Frigidaire reviewed guidance note that water that is too cool can keep some detergents or tablets from dissolving. Compare the dishwasher manual and detergent instructions rather than assuming one temperature fits every installation.
   • If the manufacturer recommends warming the kitchen hot-water line before starting, follow that procedure while avoiding scalding water.

   Check only owner-accessible spray paths

   • With power off, confirm that visible spray arms are not blocked by dishes and rotate freely only if the manual says they should. Clean removable, user-serviceable filters or nozzles only by the exact model procedure.
   • Do not remove pump covers, service panels or hidden circulation parts to chase detergent residue.

   Run one controlled empty or normal test if the manufacturer allows it

   • After correcting loading and detergent issues, run the manufacturer-recommended test cycle. Samsung states that if detergent dispenses normally in an empty cycle, service may not be needed.
   • If the dispenser still does not release detergent on a normal completed cycle, request service rather than forcing the mechanism.
