Dryer Making Noise: Rattling, Thumping, Squealing or Vibration

Likely categories to check

• Zippers, buckles, buttons, coins, pens, or other loose items are striking the drum or cabinet.
• Large or heavy items are balled up, creating a repeating thump as the drum turns.
• The dryer is not level, one foot is not firmly contacting the floor, or the cabinet is touching a wall, washer, vent, cord, or nearby object.
• A dryer that has been unused or is very cold can make temporary roller or rubber thumping that fades after several minutes on some models.
• A gas dryer can make normal valve-clicking sounds, while heat-pump or condenser models may make pump or airflow sounds not found on vented dryers.
• A persistent scraping, grinding, squealing, or heavy knocking sound can involve internal support, belt, pulley, blower, motor, drum, or mounting components and needs model-specific service diagnosis.

   Stop and identify the type of sound

   • Pause the dryer and note whether the sound is rattling, thumping, squealing, scraping, buzzing, clicking, or vibration. Note whether it happens only with a load or also with an empty drum.
   • If there is smoke, a burning or electrical odor, visible sparking, a hot or damaged plug/receptacle, severe scraping, or the drum appears loose or damaged, stop use and request service.

   Check the load and pockets

   • Remove coins, keys, pens, hardware, and other loose objects. Fasten or turn garments with large zippers, buckles, or metal trim inside out when the garment care label allows it.
   • Untangle sheets, blankets, bathmats, and other large items. A balled load can create a rhythmic thump even when the dryer itself is healthy.

   Run a brief empty-drum comparison only if safe

   • If there are no stop-use symptoms, run the manufacturer-approved cycle briefly with the drum empty and stay nearby. Frigidaire recommends this comparison to separate clothing noise from machine noise.
   • If the loud or harsh sound remains with an empty drum, stop repeating tests and move to installation checks or service.

   Check level and nearby contact points

   • Confirm the dryer sits solidly without rocking and that all feet contact the floor. Use the installation instructions for any leveling adjustment.
   • Make sure the cabinet is not touching the washer, wall, vent duct, cord, pedestal contents, or objects stored on top. Do not tilt or support a heavy appliance unless the manufacturer procedure clearly allows it and you can do so safely.

   Inspect only visible, accessible areas

   • With the dryer off, look along the visible front and rear drum edges for an obvious loose object and inspect the lint-screen opening only as the owner manual permits.
   • Do not reach into hidden moving areas, remove service panels, or probe the blower, belt, rollers, motor, wiring, or gas components.

   Compare the sound with the exact model manual

   • Dryer designs differ. A gas valve click, heat-pump drain-pump buzz, compressor/fan sound, or short-lived roller thump may be normal on one design and absent on another.
   • If the sound is persistent, worsening, or not described as normal for the model, schedule service rather than replacing parts based on sound alone.
