Dryer Not Heating: Safe Electric and Gas Checks

If the drum tumbles but the load receives no heat, first confirm the cycle and whether the dryer is electric or gas. A power-supply, gas-supply, setting, airflow, or internal condition may be involved; the symptom alone does not identify a failed part.

What can cause this symptom

  • Air Only, Air Fluff, Cool, or another non-heated setting is selected.
  • An electric dryer has enough 120-volt power to tumble but has lost the full 208/240-volt supply needed for heat.
  • A gas dryer has no fuel supply, an interrupted utility or LP supply, or another ignition/heating condition.
  • Restricted airflow or a blocked vent is extending drying or causing heat protection to operate.
  • An internal heater, thermal device, ignition component, sensor, control, or wiring condition requires service.

Safe checks in order

  1. 1

    Confirm the symptom

    • Verify that the drum actually tumbles and that there is no warmth after a manufacturer-supported heated test. A no-start condition belongs to a different diagnostic path.
    • If there is some warmth but drying is slow, also inspect the lint filter, load, and accessible exhaust path; airflow is not proof of a failed heater.
  2. 2

    Check the cycle and options

    • Select a normal heated or timed-dry setting supported by the model. Air Only, Air Fluff, and Cool settings intentionally provide no heat.
    • Allow for model features such as LG Energy Saver, which can begin with an extended no-heat period.
  3. 3

Identify electric or gas without moving the dryer

    • Use the model label, owner’s manual, or visible installation information. Do not pull out a connected dryer merely to inspect behind it.
    • Apply only the fuel-specific branch below.
  4. 4

For an electric dryer: reset the supply once

    • An electric dryer may tumble on one 120-volt leg while the heater lacks the full 208/240-volt supply. At the electrical panel, move the dryer’s paired/double breaker fully OFF and then ON once if it is dry, undamaged, and safe to access.
    • Stop if it trips again. Do not remove terminal covers, open panels, test live voltage, or repair wiring; use an electrician or qualified service.
  5. 5

For a gas dryer: observe only

    • If there is no gas odor, compare the externally visible gas-supply position and fuel availability with the exact installation instructions; interruption of natural gas or an empty LP supply may prevent heat.
    • Do not loosen fittings, move the dryer, relight, test for leaks, or repair gas components. Any gas odor triggers the emergency instructions above.
  6. 6

    Check only accessible airflow items

    • Clean the lint filter and inspect an accessible exterior outlet for obvious blockage only when the exact manual permits it.
    • Do not disconnect hidden ducting or continue repeated cycles. A passed vent check with no heat points to service on brands such as Samsung.

Brand and model differences

  • LG distinguishes true no heat from long drying and documents Energy Saver and installation-test behavior; its gas-odor instructions require leaving the area and contacting the gas supplier.
  • Samsung notes that severe vent restriction can suppress heat, but directs service when its vent test passes and the dryer still does not heat.
  • GE explains that an electric dryer can tumble on 120 volts while needing 208/240 volts for heat; this guide excludes GE’s terminal-block inspection because it crosses the homeowner-safe boundary.
  • Whirlpool and Maytag both document heated-cycle selection, the two-breaker electric supply, gas supply, and professional diagnosis of internal heating parts.
  • Bosch directs a dryer that is not warming to support; Bosch E06 identifies a heating-circuit fault for an authorized technician.
  • Frigidaire distinguishes electric dual-circuit supply from gas-supply checks and recommends an electrician verify 240-volt power.

Actions not recommended

  • Do not replace an element, fuse, igniter, valve, or board from the symptom alone.
  • Do not probe a 208/240-volt circuit or remove a terminal or appliance panel.
  • Do not loosen gas connections, use a flame to check for leaks, or attempt ignition repair.
  • Do not repeatedly run the dryer with severe vent restriction or an unresolved safety warning.

When to request service

  • The dryer tumbles but remains cold after a documented heated setting and the appropriate external supply check.
  • A breaker trips again, the outlet or cord appears damaged, or qualified voltage verification is needed.
  • Gas supply is available but there is no heat, or any gas component would need inspection.
  • A code returns, a vent test passes with no heat, or the next step requires panels, instruments, internal wiring, or heating components.
