Dryer Won’t Start: Safe Checks Before Service

Likely categories to check

• The dryer has no household power, a breaker/fuse issue, a damaged cord/plug, or an installation problem.
• Child Lock or Control Lock is active and preventing Start from responding.
• The door is not completely closed, laundry is caught in the opening, or the dryer detects a door/latch condition.
• The selected cycle has not actually started because Start/Hold to Start was not held as the model requires.
• An error code or blinking-light condition is blocking operation and should be addressed before resetting.

   Separate no power from powers-on-but-will-not-start

   • Note whether the display, indicator lights, or drum light come on. If the dryer is completely dead, begin with household power and the visible power connection rather than the door or cycle controls.
   • If the panel powers on, keep the troubleshooting focused on messages, Control/Child Lock, door closure, and the Start procedure.

   Check for a message, code, or lock indicator

   • Record any error code or blinking-light pattern before changing settings or resetting power.
   • If Child Lock or Control Lock is shown, use only the exact owner-manual button sequence for that model. Do not assume every dryer uses the same buttons or hold time.

   Close the door normally and clear visible obstructions

   • Remove clothing caught in the opening and close the dryer door firmly without slamming it.
   • Do not press the door switch by hand, defeat the latch, wedge the door, or insert a tool into the switch area. A recurring door-related message needs model-specific service.

   Start a simple cycle using the documented Start method

   • Select a normal timed or manual cycle if the model offers one and use the owner-manual Start/Hold to Start method. Some models require the Start control to be held briefly rather than tapped.
   • If the timer begins counting down but the drum does not turn, stop repeating start attempts and follow the manufacturer service path.

   Check the visible household power path without live testing

   • For a completely dead dryer, confirm the plug is fully inserted, the cord and outlet show no burn marks, and the breaker has not tripped. Never use an extension cord.
   • If the breaker repeatedly trips, the receptacle or cord is damaged, or an electric-dryer installation looks loose or incorrect, stop and contact a licensed electrician or qualified installer. Do not remove the terminal cover or measure live voltage yourself.

   Use a power reset only when appropriate

   • After recording any code and completing the basic checks, one manufacturer-documented power cycle may clear a temporary control state.
   • Do not repeatedly clear a returning error. Repeated resets can erase useful diagnostic history without fixing the cause.
