Likely categories to check
- Loose, damaged or incorrectly sealed inlet hoses or faucet connections.
- A drain hose that is loose, damaged, inserted incorrectly or allowing water to miss/back up from the standpipe.
- Excess detergent or non-HE detergent creating oversudsing that escapes the washer.
- A front-load door gasket or glass with debris, trapped clothing or visible damage, or a dispenser that is clogged or not fully closed.
- An unlevel washer, overloaded/bulky load or internal hose, pump, tub or seal issue that requires service.
Safe checks in order
- 1
Stop the cycle and identify when the leak happens
- If the leak is substantial, stop using the washer and shut off both water-supply valves if they are accessible and dry.
- Note whether water appears while filling, tumbling/agitating, draining or spinning, and whether it starts at the back, front, dispenser, door, standpipe or underneath. This timing is more useful than guessing a part.
- 2
Inspect visible inlet hoses and faucet connections
- With the washer off, look for drips at the hot and cold faucet connections and where the hoses attach to the washer. Check for obvious cracks, bulges, kinks or missing/damaged hose washers.
- Do not keep tightening a cracked fitting or cross-threaded connection. Follow the installation manual for hose washers and tightening; damaged hoses or fittings should be replaced, not taped.
- 3
Check the drain hose and household standpipe
- Make sure the drain hose is secured as the installation manual specifies and has not slipped out, kinked or split. Look for evidence that the standpipe or laundry sink is backing up during drain.
- Do not create an airtight seal around the drain hose unless the manufacturer explicitly specifies one. A household drain that backs up is a plumbing problem, not proof of a failed washer pump.
- 4
Check detergent, dispenser and front-load door area
- Use HE detergent when the washer requires it and stay within the detergent and softener limits. Excess suds can overflow and mimic a leak.
- On front loaders, wipe the accessible door glass and gasket and remove hair, thread or small items without pulling the gasket from the cabinet. Make sure the dispenser drawer is clean and fully closed.
- 5
Check leveling and load conditions
- A badly unlevel machine or bulky, water-resistant or severely unbalanced load can splash water where it normally would not go. Confirm leveling using the installation instructions.
- Do not reach under, tilt or run the washer with guards removed to watch for an internal leak. If water clearly comes from inside the cabinet, stop and request service.
Brand and model differences
- Samsung leak guidance includes the door/gasket, hoses, dispenser, detergent and drain setup among common external checks before service.
- Whirlpool separates leak location and calls out inlet-hose washers, drain-hose security, household drain backups, leveling and load conditions.
- Frigidaire recommends checking the household drain, drain hose, fill-hose threads/sealing washers and HE detergent/oversudsing.
- Exact drain-hose insertion height, standpipe dimensions and hose-tightening instructions are model-specific; use the installation manual rather than generic measurements.
Actions not recommended
- Do not crawl under or tilt a water-filled washer while it is connected to power.
- Do not bypass the lid or door lock to watch a cycle with guards open.
- Do not use tape, sealant or glue as a permanent repair for a leaking pressure hose or cracked fitting.
- Do not overtighten plastic inlet fittings; cross-threading or cracking can make the leak worse.
- Do not keep running test cycles when water is escaping from inside the cabinet.
When to request service
- Water is coming from underneath or inside the cabinet after visible hoses and plumbing are ruled out.
- A door gasket is torn, an inlet connection or cabinet fitting is cracked, or a pump/internal hose appears to be leaking.
- The washer leaks even with correct detergent, normal loading, proper leveling and drain installation.
- There is a fault code, burning smell, arcing, repeated breaker trip or any water near electrical components.
