Washer Shaking or Vibrating: Safe Checks

Supported cause categories

• A single bulky item, tangled items, an overloaded washer, or a model-specific underload has shifted the load to one side.
• One or more feet do not contact the floor firmly, the washer is not level, or the foot lock nuts are loose.
• The floor is flexible, slippery, uneven, carpeted, or otherwise outside the exact installation requirements.
• A new or recently moved washer still has model-specific shipping bolts, rods, braces, foam, or base packing installed.
• The selected load, cycle, or high spin speed creates more movement than a lower supported setting; brief sensing or balance attempts may be normal.
• Water is not draining as expected, or excess suds or another model-specific condition is disrupting spin.
• Persistent vibration after external checks requires service diagnosis; the symptom alone cannot identify an internal part.

Safe checks in order

   Stop and classify the movement

   • Pause with the control and wait until all motion stops and the door or lid unlocks normally. Do not touch, hold, lean on, or reach into a moving washer.
   • Note the load, cycle, spin speed, timing, displayed message, remaining water, and whether the problem began after installation or moving. Stop instead of testing if any danger sign above is present.

   Redistribute a safe load

   • With all motion stopped, untangle and spread items evenly. Remove some items if packed tightly; for a small unbalanced load, follow the exact manual on adding similar items.
   • Wash bulky or waterproof items only on cycles and load combinations allowed by the exact model. Do not repeatedly restart a load that causes violent movement.

   Check stable installation from outside

   • With the washer off and empty, gently press opposite top corners. All feet should remain firmly on the floor without rocking. Use the exact installation instructions before adjusting feet or lock nuts.
   • Confirm the washer is on a firm, level surface and is not contacting walls, cabinets, hoses, pans, or loose objects. Do not move or tip a heavy washer alone.

   Recheck a recent installation or move

   • Compare the rear, base, and packing area with the exact model installation instructions. Front-load bolts, top-load rods, braces, foam, and removal methods are not interchangeable.
   • If access requires tipping, lifting, stacking work, or reaching behind a heavy unit, stop and use the installer or service. Save removed transport hardware for a future move.

   Separate spin speed, drain, and suds

   • If official model instructions allow it, use a lower spin speed for a load that is difficult to balance. A reduced setting may leave clothes wetter and does not prove a fault.
   • If water remains, follow the Washer Won’t Drain guide first. Use only the detergent type and amount specified for the model; do not add chemicals to suppress suds.

   Run only a manufacturer-supported check

   • After correcting a non-dangerous external cause, use only the exact manual’s empty or test-load rinse/spin procedure. Stay clear and stop immediately if heavy shaking, banging, walking, leaking, or abnormal noise returns.
   • If the washer is stable empty but repeatedly shakes with appropriate loads, or shakes through more than high-speed spin, record the behavior and request service.
