GE Microwave Probe Error Code

Probe is one of the few GE microwave messages with a documented owner check: when the appliance and probe are cool, make sure the removable probe is firmly inserted into the microwave probe receptacle and the food item. If the message remains, stop there and request service.

Applies to GE microwave oven with an electronic control that uses the documented GE microwave fault-code table

What the appliance detected

Detected condition

GE says Probe can mean an open temperature probe or that the probe is not plugged in during a temperature-cook function.

What may contribute

Possible causes

  • The removable temperature probe may not be fully inserted during a temperature-cook function.
  • The probe circuit may be open.
  • The probe, receptacle, wiring, connector, or control may require diagnosis if correct insertion does not clear the message.

Start conservatively

Safe preliminary checks

Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.

  1. Record the message and confirm the model uses a temperature probe

    • Photograph or write down the Probe message and the full GE model number.
    • Use the model manual to confirm the appliance is designed for a removable food-temperature probe.
  2. Check only the removable probe connection when everything is cool

    • After cooking has stopped and the cavity, food, and probe are cool enough to handle safely, make sure the probe is firmly inserted into the microwave probe receptacle and into the food item as GE directs.
    • Do not remove panels, reach behind the receptacle, meter the probe circuit, or use a damaged probe.
  3. If needed, use the GE 30-second power reset once

    • If the probe is correctly inserted and there are no hazard signs, shut off the breaker or fuse supplying the microwave for 30 seconds.
    • Restore power once. If Probe returns, stop using the temperature-probe function and request qualified service.

Actions not recommended

  • Do not remove the outer cabinet, control panel, waveguide cover, vent housing, or any microwave service panel.
  • Do not touch or test the high-voltage capacitor, transformer, inverter, magnetron, internal fuses, relays, thermal sensors, humidity sensors, probes, interlock wiring, or control boards. Dangerous voltage can remain after power is disconnected.
  • Do not perform live-voltage, resistance, continuity, capacitor-discharge, or internal connector testing as a homeowner troubleshooting step.
  • Do not bypass, tape, bridge, defeat, or adjust a door-interlock switch, and do not operate a microwave with a damaged or misaligned door.
  • Do not replace a sensor, touch panel, probe, board, relay, fuse, or wiring harness from the display code alone.

When to stop and request service

  • Request qualified microwave service if the code returns after the single GE-documented power reset.
  • Leave the microwave powered off and request service immediately for smoke, a burning odor, repeated arcing, abnormal overheating, a damaged door, visible electrical damage, water near electrical parts, or repeated breaker trips.
