What the appliance detected
Detected condition
Whirlpool says the home outlet or electrical connection to the cooking appliance may be miswired. It may also appear after certain power disturbances or improper interaction during power-up.
What may contribute
Possible causes
- A miswired home outlet or electrical connection to the appliance.
- Unexpected power-supply-line noise during a power outage that the control detected as incorrect voltage.
- Keys being pressed before the documented delay during power-up.
Start conservatively
Safe preliminary checks
Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.
Record the exact display and model
- Photograph or write down whether the display shows F9, F9 E0, F9E0, E0 F9, or E0F9.
- Confirm the exact model number and locate its owner and installation manuals.
Treat installation concerns as professional work
- If the appliance was recently installed or the electrical connection may be wrong, stop using it and contact a qualified electrician to verify the supply.
- Do not reset the breaker to dismiss a suspected miswired connection.
Preserve power-up context
- Note whether the code followed a power outage or appeared while controls were pressed during power-up.
- Do not repeatedly cycle power or press controls while the appliance is starting.
Use Whirlpool power-reset guidance only when appropriate
- Do not proceed until a suspected installation or connection problem has been ruled out and the exact model documentation supports a reset.
- When appropriate, turn off the supplying breaker or fuse for one minute, restore power, and monitor for one minute. If the code returns, stop and request service rather than repeating the reset.
Actions not recommended
- Do not open an outlet, junction box, terminal block, power cord connection, or appliance panel.
- Do not perform voltage, continuity, resistance, or energized testing, and do not rewire the appliance.
- Do not automatically reset a recently installed appliance or suspected miswired connection.
When to stop and request service
- Contact a qualified electrician if the appliance was recently installed or an outlet or connection problem is possible.
- Request appliance service if the electrical supply has been professionally verified and the code remains or returns.
- Seek urgent help for smoke, sparking, a burning smell, uncontrolled heating, visible wiring damage, repeated breaker trips, or abnormal heat.
