GE Appliances Washer Lid / Lid Locked light Error Code

GE documents Lid messages in several contexts: a cycle stopped because the lid is open, the lid is locked during part of the cycle, or some models need the lid opened after repeated cycles before starting again.

The washer is reporting a lid-open, lid-locked, or lid-use condition depending on the model message.

What may contribute

Possible causes

  • The lid may be open during a cycle that requires it closed.
  • The lid may be locked during load sensing or spin.
  • On some 2017 and newer electronic-control washers, several cycles may have been started without opening the lid.

Start conservatively

Safe preliminary checks

Work in order and stop whenever a step is not supported by the documentation for your model.

  1. Identify the exact lid message

    • Record whether the display says Lid, the Lid Locked light is on, or a lock icon is shown.
    • Confirm the model manual because GE uses lid indicators differently by model.

  2. Close or open the lid only when safe

    • If the cycle stopped because the lid is open, close the lid and restart as the model controls allow.
    • If the model requires opening the lid before another cycle, open and close it normally before starting again.

  3. Wait for unlock during spin

    • If the lid is locked during spin, pause the washer and wait for the basket to coast fully to a stop before expecting it to unlock.
    • GE notes this can take up to about 3 minutes depending on speed and load size.

Actions not recommended

  • Do not bypass, tape, or defeat the lid lock.
  • Do not force the lid open while locked.
  • Do not open the console or access lock wiring or switches.

When to stop and request service

  • The lid remains locked after the washer is paused, motion has stopped, and model-supported reset guidance has been followed.
  • The Lid message persists even when the lid is being used normally.
  • The lid, lock, or visible mechanism appears damaged.
