Washer Will Not Spin: Safe Checks Before Service

Supported categories to check

• Water remains because the washer has not drained; many washers do not proceed to full spin until pump-out succeeds.
• The selected cycle or saved option uses Low Spin, No Spin, a delicate behavior, or another model-specific reduced-spin setting.
• A single bulky item, tangled load, overload, or model-specific underload is unbalanced, so the washer retries, slows, delays, or cancels high-speed spin.
• The lid or door is not fully closed or locked, or visible debris obstructs the accessible latch area.
• The washer is not level or stable, or a recent installation retains exact-model shipping material.
• Excess suds, a model-specific control state, or an internal drive/control condition needs further diagnosis.

Safe checks in order

   First check whether water remains

   • If water is still in the washer, use the Washer Won’t Drain guide first. Do not duplicate spin tests while the drain condition remains.
   • Keep clear of leaking water and electrical parts. Use only exact-model accessible drain checks.

   Confirm the cycle includes the expected spin

   • Check the exact manual for spin speed and options such as Low Spin, No Spin, Delicates, Hand Wash, Rinse Hold, or their model-specific equivalents. Labels differ.
   • A completed gentle cycle or reduced setting can leave wetter clothes without proving a malfunction.

   Redistribute and right-size the load

   • Pause safely and wait for the door or lid to unlock normally. Untangle and spread items evenly; reduce a tightly packed load or balance a single bulky item using the manufacturer method.
   • Some models also struggle with very small loads. Do not add items unless the exact guidance supports it. Balance correction does not prove the washer is mechanically healthy.

   Check door or lid closure without bypassing it

   • Remove visible clothing or debris from the closure and accessible latch area, then close normally and confirm the documented locked/closed indication.
   • Never bypass, jumper, tape, defeat, or energize the washer with a lid/door safety interlock defeated.

   Check level and installation context

   • With the washer off, confirm it stands firmly without rocking and compare leveling and floor requirements with the installation guide. Stop if it walks or strikes the cabinet.
   • For a recently installed front loader, check shipping/transit-bolt instructions only for the exact model. Do not assume bolts are present or remove unrelated hardware.

   Consider suds only where supported

   • Whirlpool and LG document reduced or impaired spin with excessive suds in covered contexts. Use the specified HE detergent where required and the measured amount in the exact manual.
   • Do not keep adding rinse cycles or chemicals as a universal cure.

   Use only a manufacturer-supported restart or test

   • Cancel or restart only as the model manual directs. GE’s Hydrowave reset, Samsung Calibration, and LG Spin Only procedures apply only to documented families and are not universal resets.
   • If the washer drains but still will not spin after applicable external checks, request service rather than repeating operation.
